| Panel
discussion
State, local officials
to discuss process of making decisions
"The Role of the Political Decision-Maker Balancing
the Varied Interests of Community", a panel discussion
sponsored by the L-R economics and political science departments,
will be held Monday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Belk Centrum.
Panel speakers will include Sen. Austin Allran;
Greg McGinnis, city manager of Boiling
Springs, N.C.; and Dr. Leoluca Orlando,
former mayor of Palermo, Sicily, and representative to
the European Parliament. A member of several parliament
committees, Orlando is working toward a greater role of
the Mediterranean basin in the European Community and
also for the adoption of a common program of action in
the fight against organized crime.
Discussion will focus on the political decision-making
process in regard to its response to the organized interests
attempting to influence it. The manner in which officials
respond to these interests characterizes the procedures
and quality of democracy. The panel will discuss the criteria
for making political decisions at the local, national
or international level. |
